Ambiguity Series #15 (Stairwell, Templemichael Castle, County Cork, Ireland) 1/20
Templemichael Castle is to the north of Youghal, in Co. Cork, Ireland.
Although it’s believed to have been built by the FitzGerald family built during the 16th century, some sources state that the original Castle dates back to the 12th century and was a Knights Templar stronghold.
It’s said that Oliver Cromwell and his troops attacked the castle in 1649 and due to a lack of historical information about it, this may have been when it was destroyed.
We visited in the Spring of 2022 and whilst Michael made paintings of the gloomy interiors, I was spending my time focusing on the ruined stonework. Looking up into the spiral stairwell the curved walls and occasional stone tread suspended far above me gave a sense of movement without definition. And this is what I have hoped to capture here.
